Making a tileable texture with Gimp
Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/) is a free imaging editing tools that has so many tools and plugins you'll wont know where to look. One thing it can do is make tileable textures from existing images. If you're using Gimp that is greater than version 2 then first load the image you wish to make tileable, then right click and click on 'filters', 'map' then 'Make Seemless' and click on ok. What I find gives the best results is to make the source image large enough so that there is less of a repeating pattern eg 256x256 is usually ok.
If you're using a version less than version 2 then instead of clicking on 'Make Seemless' click on 'resynthesize'.
